Why won’t my EM31 files open on the DAT31W program?

EM31 files are stored in the data logger as a different file type than the DAT31MK2 program can open.  If the files that you are trying to open have the .R31 extension, they need to be converted to .G31 extension with the DAT31W program.  Click here to read more.

If you’re files are the correct type (.G31), and the DAT31W program still cannot open your files, you may have an outdated DAT31W program. Older DAT31W programs cannot open newer .G31 files although newer DAT31W programs have the ability to open older .G31 files.  Visit Geonics Download page to download the zip file, “DAT31W (Windows).”  You will need a password from either  your rental company or Geonics to extract this program.  For further instructions, visit our page “EM31-MK2 Install DAT31W.”

Geonics EM31 only shows negative conductivity values

Geonics EM31 troubleshooting almost always starts with checking the batteries. Turn on the EM31 and set the knob to battery, to read the voltage. If the needle reads between the battery marks or between +/- 4.4V, batteries should not be an issue. Note, the plus and minus values should be the same. If the readings are different, check the battery contacts. Geonics states “Through the normal course of operation, it is possible that the battery contacts will become contaminated with dirt and grit. To clean these contacts use fine sand paper (#400 or higher) and wipe several times over the contact. Ensure that the spring action of the battery holders is maintained. Bend holder sides slightly if necessary.”

Assuming the EM31 is not located over an metal or near any source of cultural interference, confirm the EM31 instrument is still reading negative values for apparent conductivity. If the EM31 still does not seem to be operating correctly, remove the transmitter and receiver booms.

High humidity inside the Geonics instrument can cause a malfunction

High humidity and a large change in temperature may cause condensation inside the tube. Try using a small blow hair dryer to gentle warm and dry out the tube. The main body may also need to be dried out. Reassemble the transmitter and receiver to see if the EM31 yields positive apparent conductivity values.
